In the face of criticism from the opposition about his administration, US Attorney General William Barr wants to testify in the House of Representatives at the end of March. This emerges from a letter from the Democrats to the Justice Committee published on Twitter yesterday (local time).
In it, MEPs are concerned about possible abuse of the U.S. judicial system for political purposes since President Donald Trump took office. Such abuse is „a threat to our democracy and unacceptable from the Justice Committee’s perspective“.
Trump’s wish-fulfiller?
In the letter, the committee members complain, among other things, about the recent recommendation by the Ministry of Justice to significantly reduce the sentence for Trump’s long-time confidant Roger Stone „at the apparent request of the President“. Stone faces trial for his role in the Russia affair.
In November, he was found guilty by a jury on several charges. In connection with contacts to the disclosure platform WikiLeaks, he is charged with false statements, hindrance to investigations and influencing witnesses. Stone had rejected the allegations.
The prosecutors recommended a seven to nine-year prison sentence to the federal court in Washington on Monday given the seriousness of Stone’s offenses. President Trump had criticized the recommendation on Twitter.
