Turkey has launched a counter-offensive to kill four soldiers in an attack by Syrian government forces in Idlib province. Up to 35 Syrian soldiers were killed, said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul today. The military operation continues.
Erdogan urged Russia not to „hinder“ the ongoing military deployment. The opposition-based Syrian human rights observatory based in the UK spoke of six deaths and more than 20 injuries. According to Ankara, four Turkish soldiers had previously been killed in an attack by the Syrian army in Idlib. The artillery fire also injured nine soldiers today, one of them seriously.
The Turkish army has twelve observation posts in Idlib. These were built on the basis of an agreement concluded in September 2018 between Russia, the main ally of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad, and Turkey.
