Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) met the heads of government of the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia in Prague today. The Visegrad summit will deal with the major issues in the EU such as the future of Europe, climate policy, the next financial framework 2021-2027 and migration.
Shortly before the meeting announced that the four Visegrad countries would like to act as bridge builders between East and West in order to overcome the „trenches in Europe“. After welcoming the guest from Austria, the five heads of government laid flowers together on the memorial stone for Jan Palach in front of the National Museum on Wenceslas Square.
The student had burned himself at this point on January 19, 1969 in protest against the suppression of the Prague spring.
„Mr. Babis, you are a shame“
On this occasion, there were also expressions of displeasure against the Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis. A young woman shouted from a passing car: „Mr. Babis, you are a shame.“ On the opposite side of the street, some activists protested against the planned expansion of nuclear power in the Czech Republic.
The Czech Prime Minister has been facing major protests for months. The billionaire large entrepreneur is accused of a conflict of interest as an entrepreneur and politician. The prosecutor’s office is investigating Babis on suspicion of subsidy fraud. Regardless, the EU Commission had sent auditors to Prague.
