A ceasefire has entered into force in the Syrian rebel stronghold Idlib, according to information from Moscow. The fire break started yesterday, the Russian army said. It came into force in accordance with a corresponding Russian-Turkish agreement. The day before, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in Istanbul.

The province of Idlib in the northwest of the civil war is the last rebel stronghold in Syria. With government troops advancing, countless people are fleeing there. According to the United Nations, more than 280,000 people fled air raids and battles in December alone.
