In Algeria, former Prime Minister Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been elected president. According to official information, Tebboune achieved an absolute majority with 58 percent of the votes in the first ballot, as the national election authority ANIE announced today. Voter turnout was listed at almost 40 percent overall, which is significantly lower than previous elections.

The presidential election was accompanied by mass protests and riots. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in the capital city of Algiers alone. They saw the five admitted candidates as a continuation of the policy of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned in April.
