For the first time of its three-day federal party congress, the German SPD wants to put for the first time today a duo chosen by the members to the head of the party. The election of Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans as new party leaders is scheduled for the afternoon.
With a coalition critical course, they had prevailed in the basic vote against Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his partner Klara Geywitz. The 600 delegates also vote on a leadership motion from the party leadership, calling for more climate protection, a minimum wage of twelve euros and more investment from the Union. Parts of the party left want to force that is also voted on a withdrawal from the coalition.
No combat vote over vice-party chiefs
According to Reuters, the SPD at the federal party conference, however, waived a fight vote on the deputy posts. According to the information, there will be five party ranks instead of three originally planned. As the fifth deputy party leader was provided for the Schleswig-Holstein SPD leader Serpil Midyatli, it was said from party circles.
Other party members were Klara Geywitz, Anke Rehlinger, Juso CEO Kevin Kühnert and Labor Minister Hubertus Heil. This agreement was made on the sidelines of the congress, as Reuters reported with reference to persons familiar with the matter. The delegates still have to agree.
