To reduce the number of measles diseases in Germany, new vaccinations are required in daycare centers and schools. The German Bundestag today passed a law by Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU), which is due to enter into force on 1 March 2020.
Parents then have to prove that they have been vaccinated before taking their children to day care centers or schools. In case of violations, fines should threaten up to 2,500 euros. For children who are already in kindergartens or at school, until July 31, 2021 to prove that they have been vaccinated or had the measles already.
Spahn said: „Measles protection is child protection.“ The law was designed to protect the most vulnerable from the highly contagious disease and put it on community facilities. The duty to vaccinate should also apply to staff in day-care centers and schools, to employees in medical facilities as well as to residents and employees in accommodation for asylum seekers. By a special vote, 459 members of parliament voted in favor of the law, 89 rejected it, 105 abstained.
