The opposition in the German Bundestag has again accused Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer (CSU) of serious mistakes in the failed car toll. „If a minister causes significant financial damage and then neither takes political responsibility, nor provides for real transparency, a committee of inquiry is inevitable,“ said the left-wing traffic politician, Jörg Cezanne, dpa.

The opposition factions FDP, Greens and Left want to bring today a committee of inquiry in the Bundestag to the failed car toll on the way. It is expected that the political groups will support a request. For a committee of inquiry, at least a quarter of the deputies must vote. Green, FDP and Left together would have enough votes together.

ECJ tipped toll

Scheuer is under pressure because he had concluded the toll collection and control contracts with Kapsch and CTS Eventim in 2018 before final legal certainty existed. The European Court of Justice (ECJ) had declared the toll illegal in mid-June, immediately after the verdict, the federal government announced the contracts. This could now result in financial demands of the companies.

The FDP traffic politician Oliver Luksic said that Scheuer does not have to answer alone the project car toll. „But he has even made massive and expensive wrong decisions without necessity. To this day, the Bundestag is deprived of important documents and notes. „Scheuer had also become entangled in contradictions and probably also lied to the Bundestag.
