North Korea has announced the resumption of nuclear talks with the US. On Friday there will be a „first contact“, on Saturday, the negotiations should be resumed at the working level, said the North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui today, according to the official North Korean news agency KCNA.
She expects talks at the working level to accelerate „positive developments“ in relations between North Korea and the US. Where the negotiations should take place was not announced at first.
Several inconclusive meetings
Talks between the US and North Korea on denuclearization have been slow for months. At a summit meeting in Hanoi in February, US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had failed to agree on steps to bring nuclear disarmament to North Korea.
North Korea had called for the sanctions to be lifted, but according to US officials, it was only offered to shut down parts of the Yongbyon nuclear power plant. The summit was then prematurely terminated by Trump. At another meeting in late June, there was also no result.
