The rival of Afghanistan’s Ashraf Ghani, Abdullah Abdullah, has declared himself the winner of Saturday’s presidential election. „We have the most votes in this election,“ said the head of government in Kabul today.

The official result, of course, will be announced by the country’s electoral commissions, Abdullah said. On Saturday, more than 9.6 million Afghans were called to elect a new president. According to the election calendar, the Independent Electoral Commission will announce preliminary results only on 19 October.

If no candidate can claim more than 50 percent of the votes in the first ballot, it will go into a runoff of the two best-placed candidates. Abdullah said he expected that there would be no runoff and his team would form the future government.
