The Supreme Court of Spain has approved the exhumation of the remains of former dictator Francisco Franco. The court said today that it had unanimously decided to reject the appeal of Franco’s relatives against the exhumation.

The government of Social Democratic Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez initially wanted to exhume and rescend Franco’s bones in June, but the judges had initially stopped the plan at the request of Franco’s descendants.

The reburial of Franco’s bones has been controversial in Spain for a long time. Its monumental mausoleum in the Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen) northwest of Madrid has been a pilgrimage site for right and right-wing extremists for years. The government wants to relinquish its remains in a smaller grave outside of Madrid.
