A young woman died following a protest against the ban on women’s stadium in Iran. She had doused and lit gas in front of a Tehran court last week. Last night, she succumbed to severe injuries at the hospital, Iranian media reported.
The 30-year-old woman was arrested by the police after trying to get into the stadium in a game by Esteghlal Tehran in Asia’s Champions League. In Iran, women are forbidden to attend football matches in the stadium.
The court sentenced the woman – known as the „Blue Girl“ in social networks alluding to the club colors of Esteghlal – to six months‘ imprisonment for insulting officials. In protest against the condemnation, the young woman then lit up.
Her death led to a wave of protests in social networks against police and justice. The stadium ban on women has been causing discussions in Iran for four decades. Even though President Hassan Rouhani is against the ban, so far he has not prevailed against the arch-conservative clergy of the country.
