The Australian government has blocked eight websites that have posted content related to the attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The foreign sites continued to broadcast the video of the attack or the alleged offender’s manifesto, said Australian Government’s Internet Security Officer Julie Inman Grant.
The alleged perpetrator, the Australian right-wing extremist Brenton Tarrant, had broadcast the attack live on the internet with 51 dead. Many users subsequently distributed the video.
After the attack, the Australian government had introduced stricter rules for website operators, which were now applied for the first time. Several other operators have removed content from their sites as requested by the authorities, said Inman Grant. Which eight websites were blocked by the Internet providers, the authorities did not communicate. If they removed the „illegal content,“ the blockade would be lifted, said Inman Grant.
