The EU has strongly condemned the violations of the international nuclear agreement announced by Iran. „We call on Iran (…) to refrain from further measures that jeopardize the preservation of the agreement,“ a spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said today in Brussels. The announcements from Teheran are noted with great concern. The EU’s adherence to the agreement depends on Iran’s full compliance with the treaty.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Jawad Sarif had previously informed the EU that Tehran would suspend all its research and development commitments on its nuclear technology because of the US withdrawal from the deal and the imposition of further sanctions. The country had already taken first steps in this direction in the past few months.
EU wants to stick to agreements
The government in Tehran justifies the steps by promising to lift its nuclear program by lifting economic isolation. However, the EU countries do not want to accept this argument. They point out that they continue to abide by the agreement and seek to ensure that EU companies can maintain business relations with Iran.
Because the US also threatens to sanction companies from the EU and other states, hardly any foreign companies have done business with Iran. A trading platform called Instex, founded by Germany, France and the UK, has not yet settled a deal.
