Italian President Sergio Mattarella has today sworn in the second government under Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. The new cabinet has 21 ministers, including seven women. The 55-year-old, non-party Conte now leads a government from the five-star movement, the Social Democrats (PD) and the left Liberi e Uguali (Free and Equal).
Member of the new Cabinet is also the non-party Minister of the Interior Luciana Larmorgese, ex-prefect of Milan. She succeeds Matteo Salvini of the right-wing Lega party, who held the post in Contes’s last administration for the past 14 months. Salvini had declared the coalition of his five-star Lega completed. Thereupon the new government alliance came about in flying change without new elections.
The new cabinet must now face the vote of confidence in parliament. This will happen early next week.
