Greece is moving 600 refugees to the mainland

The Greek government has today transferred more than 600 refugees from the Moria camp to the mainland. The 635 people from Afghanistan huddled in front of the long overcrowded refugee camp on the Aegean island of Lesbos in the waiting buses of the police, as an AFP correspondent reported.

The Greek government had taken the decision to transfer the refugees after 13 boats with 540 people arrived from Turkey last week, including 240 children.

Moria chronically overcrowded

The Moria camp has been under criticism for years, as it is chronically overcrowded. Almost 11,000 people currently live in the camp, which according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is actually designed for a quarter of this amount. After the arrival of 3,000 people in August, the already difficult hygienic situation in the tent camp has further deteriorated.

Rescue ship can to Italy

The German rescue ship „Eleonore“ with more than a hundred people on board meanwhile can dock in Italy. However, the ship is confiscated, said the Interior Ministry in Rome.

The German captain Claus-Peter Reisch had previously driven despite a ban on the Italian government in national waters and had proclaimed the state of emergency after a thunderstorm in the night. The humans had been blocked for a week on the relatively small ship.
