Lebanese President Michel Aoun has sharply condemned the alleged use of Israeli drones in Beirut, the capital. The incident is an „Israeli aggression“ and equals a „declaration of war,“ Aoun said today in a statement. This allowed Lebanon to exercise the right to defend its sovereignty. The president said Israel’s attacks would worsen the situation.
Yesterday, an Israeli drone crashed in the south of Beirut near the media center of the radical Shiite militia Hezbollah, a group spokesman said. A second drone had exploded in the air. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah then threatened Israel with resistance. Today, an Israeli drone based on Lebanese claims in the east of the country attacked the base of an Iran-loyal group.
Hezbollah is supported by Shiite Iran and, like Tehran, considers Israel its archenemy. It has great political and military influence in Lebanon. President Aoun is a close political ally of Hezbollah.
