Canada has spoken out against the speedy resumption of Russia into G-7 countries. Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said yesterday that Russia must first withdraw from the annexed Crimean peninsula and end the war in eastern Ukraine. In principle, however, everyone would welcome Russia joining the circle of states that are committed to the rule of law and democracy.

US President Donald Trump spoke again in favor of Russia’s resumption of membership in the group of states before the G-7 summit in Biarritz, France. Moscow was open.

The federation of leading industrialized countries had excluded Russia in 2014 in response to the annexation of the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula. He had shrunk from the G-8 to the G-7 group.
