After the break-up of the right-wing coalition and the five-star movement, Italy’s politics are facing a decisive day.
All eyes are turned today to Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who reports to Parliament in the afternoon on the government crisis triggered by the legacy of Interior Minister Matteo Salvini ten days ago.
The non-party head of government could undergo a vote of no confidence requested by the Lega or resign immediately. He would pave the way for a change of government or for new elections.
The five-star movement sees no room to revive the broken alliance with the Lega, with whom she has governed since June 2018. It also excludes a pact with the Social Democrats (PD) for the continuation of the legislative period.
Salvini, however, defends himself against a possible new government, excluding his right lega. The only alternative to the current Cabinet of Lega and five-star movement are new elections. „Those who fear new elections are obviously afraid to lose their chair,“ commented Salvini.
He is pushing for new elections in October, which hopes his Lega together with the right-conservative Forza Italia to win ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi.
