Following recent bloodshed in the US, the human rights organization Amnesty International is calling for America’s travelers to be more cautious. These should always have an emergency plan because of the widespread firearm violence, the organization said yesterday. Guns and rifles are in the US „omnipresent“, no one is safe from armed violence.
Step with symbolic power
The travel advice was an unusual step for Amnesty – but the organization wanted to keep the US a mirror. With similarly high levels of violence in other countries, the US Department of State would warn Americans against travel, the logic says.
„People in the United States can not really expect not to be harmed,“ said Ernest Coverson, head of Amnesty’s campaign to stop gun violence in the United States. „Once again, it becomes sobering that the US government is reluctant to provide protection against gun violence,“ he said.
