An Iranian political leader is threatened with execution after being convicted by a court over the murder of his wife. Justice spokesman Gholamhussein Ismaeili announced today, according to news agency ISNA.

Mohamed Ali Najafi had killed his much younger wife Mitra in May this year. According to the Islamic laws, the family of the victim now has the right to „retribution“. It can therefore demand from the court the death penalty for the perpetrator, but also refrain from it. However, Nadschafi’s lawyer initially wants to appeal.

Advisor to Rouhani

The trial of reform politician and economic adviser to President Hassan Rouhani had been engaging the public in Iran in recent weeks. Confirmed details of the case are still not there, but allegedly the woman Nadschafi cheated on a younger man.

The mathematics professor Nadschafi worked in several governments as Minister of Science and Education and until March 2018 also Tehran’s mayor. He was considered a close confidant of President Rouhani. In his second marriage, the 67-year-old was married to Mitra. The couple caught attention with romantic images in the social networks before the act.
