British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promised his country’s farmers new aid after Brexit. „Following an EU exit on October 31, we will have a historic opportunity to launch new farm support programs,“ Johnson said before a planned visit to Wales today.
„We will make sure that farmers get a better deal.“ Many farmers fear a slump in subsidies, an end to access to the EU market and competition from countries like the USA with looser animal welfare rules.
Scotland: Johnson’s course „dangerous“
However, Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon sees Johnson’s Brexit course as „dangerous“ for her region and the entire country. She assumes that Johnson is looking to Britain to leave the European Union without a contract, Sturgeon said yesterday following a meeting with Johnson in Edinburgh.
It was not clear how he wanted to persuade the EU to renegotiate the Brexit Treaty. „From that, no matter what he says publicly, he concludes that he’s really looking for a Brexit without a contract,“ Sturgeon said. That was the logical consequence of the hard course Johnson pursued. „I think that is extremely dangerous for Scotland, indeed for the whole United Kingdom.“
Government wants another referendum
The Scottish government will continue to prepare for another referendum on independence during the summer, Sturgeon said. In a first such vote in 2014, 55 percent of the Scots had opposed a replacement from the United Kingdom. In the Brexit referendum in June 2016, however, they had mostly voted in favor of the United Kingdom remaining in the EU.
