After more than a week of daily protests against him, the Governor of Puerto Rico will not compete in the next election next year. He also resigns as head of the PNP (New Progressive Party), said the head of the US foreign territory, Ricardo Rossello, yesterday in a televised speech.
Since the end of last week, numerous people every day in the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan take to the streets and demand Rossello’s resignation.
There have also been demonstrations against the governor in other cities in the Caribbean archipelago, which has been in serious financial crisis for years, as well as in the US and Europe.
It was triggered by a corruption scandal in the government as well as the publication of private telegram messages between Rossello and some confidants, in which they expressed disparaging views about various people – and in the opinion of many, also women and anti-gay. Rossellp, who has been governing since 2016, is the son of a former governor of Puerto Rico.
