The risk of terrorism remains high in Europe, according to a report by Europol. This is clear from Europol’s report on terrorism in the EU in 2018. Although the number of attacks had dropped significantly in 2018, far more jihad attacks were thwarted than in the previous year.
This shows that above all the danger of attacks of radical Islamists is great. In 2018, 13 people were killed in terrorist attacks, according to the report. In all cases, according to Europol, the perpetrators had jihadist motives.
More arrests
In total, EU Member States reported 201 terrorist attacks in 2018, including 24 thwarted or failed. In 2017 there were still 205 attacks. However, most of the attacks, according to the report, fall into the hands of separatist and ethnic-nationalist groups.
In 2018, there were significantly more arrests of right-wing extremist violence in Europe – 44 compared to 20 the previous year. This suggests that „extremists of different orientations increasingly consider violence as a legitimate means,“ notes Europol.
