Iran is raising uranium enrichment after ultimatum

Iran will ramp up uranium enrichment once its European ultimatum expires. The deadline expires tomorrow, said the Iranian nuclear spokesman Behrus Kamalwandi, today Iranian news agency IRIB. This will bring uranium enrichment up.

Unlike the US, the three EU member states, Britain, France and Germany, as well as China and Russia, are sticking to the 2015 nuclear agreement. Iran issued a 60-day ultimatum to EU states in early May, demanding that it pledge to protect its oil and banking industry from US sanctions.

Otherwise Iran will resume uranium enrichment to a higher degree than permitted by the agreement. This would expose Iran to further obligations under the 2015 Agreement, which has been on the wane since the US opted out and imposed new US sanctions. The other signatory states want to stick to the agreement.

Trump wants to force renegotiation

US President Donald Trump wants sanctions to force Iran to renegotiate a much stricter agreement on its nuclear and missile program. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said he was only prepared to negotiate with the US government if it returned to the Vienna nuclear deal and lifted its sanctions against its country. „We can only say to the Americans: your way was a mistake.“
