China’s President Xi Jinping met with leader Kim Jong Un to kick off his state visit to North Korea. This was reported by China state news agency Xinhua today. At first, there was no information about the contents of the meeting. Xi is the first Chinese president in 14 years to travel to the neighboring country.
As Xinhua further reported, Kim already received his guest at the airport. Hundreds of thousands of people in the capital Pyongyang greeted the Chinese delegation with flags and flowers. „Long live the friendship between China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,“ people sang, according to Xinhua.
The visit to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in the region raises hopes that new impetus will be given to the stalled negotiations on the North Korean nuclear weapons program. The Chinese president’s trip also takes place just before the G-20 summit in Japan later this month, where a meeting of Xi with US President Donald Trump is planned.
