US send 1,000 more soldiers to the Middle East
US President Donald Trump sends around 1,000 more soldiers to the Middle East in the escalating conflict with Iran. The soldiers were sent to the region for „defensive purposes,“ said US Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan yesterday (local time) in Washington. At the same time, Shanahan emphasized, „The United States does not seek a conflict with Iran.“
The US blames Iran for attacking two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday. Tehran rejects this.
Shanahan’s message said the latest attacks confirmed intelligence information about the hostility of the Iranian armed forces and their allied groups. With the dispatch of additional troops, US soldiers and US national interests in the region should be protected.
China and Russia warn
„We call on all parties to stay reasonable,“ Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in Beijing. No „Pandora’s Box“ should be opened, Wang said. „We hope that it will not come to a difficult phase of the conflict, to military action,“ said the Russian foreign intelligence chief Sergei Naryshkin in Moscow, the agency TASS.

Previously, the US had released new photos proving Iran’s responsibility for the alleged tanker attacks. The photos released yesterday by the Pentagon show, among other things, the remains of a magnet used to attach a mine to one of the tankers.
It’s supposed to be the same unexploded explosive device that the US Department of Defense had previously used to link the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. A video released by the Pentagon last week allegedly shows a Revolutionary Guards patrol boat mooring at one of the tankers to remove the unexploded mine from the hull.
The tensions between the US and Iran have been increasing for months. By the end of May, the US had increased its forces in the Middle East by 1,500 troops because of the „continuing threat“ of Iranian forces. Previously, the US military had relocated, inter alia, an aircraft carrier association and a bomber squadron in the region, which raised concerns about a military conflict.
