Rejected asylum seekers should be deported faster in the future according to the will of the EU states. In addition, it should be prevented that people submerge before their deportation. Yesterday, EU Home Affairs Ministers agreed to this reform of the Return Directive of 2008 at a meeting in Luxembourg.
Before the new rules come into force, states still have to come to an agreement with the European Parliament. That does not have a position yet. It could take several months before that happens.
The agreement provides that deportation rulings and appeals must be submitted faster. In addition, rejected asylum seekers are required to cooperate with the authorities.
