US tariffs on Mexican goods should continue to come into effect as threatened by President Donald Trump this Monday. Trump spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said today aboard the presidential plane Air Force One, although there is „much progress“ in the negotiations with the Mexican government on immigration policy. Nevertheless, it is still planned that the tariffs will be imposed.

„Our position has not changed,“ the spokeswoman said during Trump’s return flight from his trip to Europe. With the import surcharges Trump wants to bring the Mexican government to crack down on Central American migrants who want to enter the US illegally on the way via Mexico. First, the tariffs should be at five percent. By October, they could then rise to 25 percent.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who has been in Washington for a week, announced that 6,000 National Guards should be sent to the southern border of his country to stop migrants from Central America. However, this measure is obviously not enough for the US government.
