British Prime Minister Theresa May wants to resign her position as British Conservative party leader today. Reason for her resignation is the months of resistance to her Brexit course.
At the same time, the tender for a successor begins. The winner of the multi-stage process should be determined by the end of July and then replace May at the top of the government. The field of applicants is great. Eleven candidates compete for the post.
The best chances are given to former Foreign Minister Boris Johnson. But also Environment Minister Michael Gove has many supporters. Some of the candidates want to renegotiate the Brexit agreement, which has failed three times in Parliament, with Brussels and, in case of doubt, to withdraw without a deal. The deadline for leaving the EU was extended from April to 31 October.
Conservatives have been under pressure from the right since the European elections in late May. The newly formed Brexit party of Nigel Farage had made it with almost 32 percent of the votes from the state to the strongest force. The Tories were heavily punished with only about nine percent.
