In Algeria, the Constitutional Council has overturned the election of a president scheduled for 4 July. The panel justified its decision yesterday with a shortage of candidates and candidates. This will in all likelihood extend the term of interim President Abdelkader Bensalah.

However, tens of thousands of demonstrators have been calling for Bensalah’s resignation for weeks. In the North African country, young people have been demonstrating for months for a fundamental policy change. Already in April, 82-year-old President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned after a 20-year reign due to weeks of protests.

A new date for the presidential election has not yet been determined. Army General Ahmed Gaed Salah, who plays a leading role in the current transitional period leading up to the election of a new government, called on parties and protesters to discuss ways out of the crisis.
