Ecuador has become the target of more than 40 million cyber attacks following the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The attacks on websites of public institutions have come, inter alia, from Germany, the United States, Brazil, the Netherlands, Romania and Ecuador itself, said yesterday, the Deputy Minister of Information Technology and Communication, Patricio Real.
According to the information, the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Presidency, the Central Bank and some ministries and universities were particularly affected. Information was therefore not stolen in cyber attacks.
Assange was arrested at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London last Thursday after seven years. The government in Quito had previously suspended political asylum for the 47-year-old Australian, who is considered a public enemy by many because of the publication of secret US documents.
