Yesterday, a special unit of the Slovak police arrested an Italian top manager for allegedly millions of frauds surrounding the expansion of the Mochovce nuclear power plant. On their Facebook page, the police released a video of the arrest of the manager immediately after his arrival with a passenger plane from Milan.

Although the police in their official statement only mentioned the initials of those arrested, according to media reports, they are supposed to be the former boss of the majority-owned Italian energy company Enel, the NPP operating company Slovenske elektrarne (Slovak Electricity Works – SE).
Damage of 25 million euros

The Financial Police accuse the arrested man and an accomplice, also from Italy, of being the leading managers of the SE, causing their company 25 million euros in damages. The financial police have made an „accusation“ against both of them, which in Slovak criminal law is the precursor to an indictment in court.

In the Mochovce nuclear power plant, a third and fourth reactor block should go into operation as early as 2012 and 2013. The construction was delayed but again and again, at the same time the completion costs multiplied in an intransparent manner. For several years, the police have been suspected that massive corruption is to blame. So far, however, no sufficient evidence had come to light.
