Three days before the EU special summit on Brexit, the ruling Conservatives and the opposition Labor Party are not progressing. Some 80 Labor MEPs wrote to their leader Jeremy Corbyn in a letter to guarantee a second referendum should a compromise with Prime Minister Theresa May come to fruition.
A second referendum would be „treason,“ wrote the representative of the British Cabinet of Parliamentary Affairs, Andrea Leadsom, in an article for the Sunday Telegraph. Leadsom is part of the camp of Brexit advocates.
A renewed referendum would bring a lengthy delay, she writes. Since Parliament has not been able to implement the outcome of the first referendum so far, there is no reason to believe that a second vote could succeed.
Disappointment at Labor
The Labor Party had recently been disappointed by the recent history of talks with the government. „So far, I have not seen any major changes in the government’s position,“ Corbyn said. Labor politician Diane Abbott also demanded a little more flexibility in a BBC interview: „There’s no question that the mess we’re in is the mess of May.“
Decision on extension of time limit
On Wednesday, the heads of state and government of EU member states want to decide on an extension of the deadline at their special summit in Brussels. May is under massive pressure to give a substantiated justification for the requested extension of the deadline for withdrawal from the European Union.
Britain’s participation in the European elections in late May could not be communicated to many people in the face of Brexit, Tory politicians said. „I would even go so far as to say that would be the farewell letter for the conservative party,“ Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi told the BBC. Conservatives warn, according to the newspaper „The Telegraph“ also a „catastrophic damage“ in the local elections on 2 May in the country.
The Sunday Times reports that May is now launching a new run to convince the Labor Party of its Brexit agreement. The head of government wants to enshrine a customs agreement with the European Union in the law, writes the newspaper. Under the new plan, the present withdrawal agreement should be rewritten. The British government did not want to comment.
