NATO intends to set up a base for US military equipment in Poland. A spokesperson for the military alliance in Brussels yesterday confirmed a report by the Wall Street Journal. According to the base in Powidz will be built about 200 kilometers west of Warsaw and serve as a depot for weapons, ammunition and armored vehicles of the US Army.
The cost of building the base is estimated at $ 260 million (€ 230 million). The newspaper cited NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with the statement that the construction work will begin this year and last two years.
Since the Ukraine conflict and the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Russia five years ago, NATO has significantly expanded its military capabilities on its eastern flank. In 2017, she stationed about 4,000 soldiers in the three Baltic States and Poland. Germany took the lead over a battalion in Lithuania, Great Britain in Estonia, Canada in Latvia and the USA in Poland.
