Donald Trump sees Brazil as a potential member of NATO. The American president said this on Tuesday at the reception of his Brazilian counterpart Jair Bolsonaro in the White House.

Trump says the United States has never had such good relations with Brazil as it does now. Bolsonaro would like to see Brazil becoming a modern North American-inspired power.

Bolsonaro wants to get rid of the Brazilian image of a poor Latin American country and the suspicion of Brazilians towards the United States.

NATO has had one Latin American member since 2018, Colombia. However, as a so-called „international partner“, the country is not obliged to participate in military actions of the partnership.

Bolsonaro is known as ‚Trump of the tropics‘
The president sees himself as an ally of Trump. According to observers, he modeled his presidential election campaign after that of Trump in 2016. He even got the nickname „the Trump of the tropics.“

Brazil is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of area and population. The two leaders are expected to talk about energy and agricultural policy, among other things, and about relations with, for example, Venezuela and China.
