At least fifty people died on Sunday in a flood in the Indonesian province of Papua.

The local emergency response service has confirmed this to Reuters news agency . In addition to the dead, dozens of people were seriously injured. People are also missing. Different rescue teams are still looking for them.

The flood occurred in the Sentani region, near Jayapura, the capital of the easternmost province of Indonesia. Due to the rapid set-up of the water, people had little time to bring themselves to safety.

The area has had to deal with heavy rainfall lately. According to a spokesperson for the authorities, rain in particular is the direct cause of the flood.

Images show how the water flows through the streets at high speed. Many buildings have also been destroyed by the water. Because of the water, there are also several mud flows in the area that cause damage.

Among other things, nine houses, two bridges and an airplane that was on the largest airport in the province were damaged. However, the airport remains open.
