The Federal Government wants to set up a so-called Climate Cabinet and thereby promote the legally binding implementation of the German climate protection goals for the year 2030. This was decided by the party and faction leaders of the Union and the SPD, according to a joint statement on Thursday evening in the coalition committee. It was also confirmed that a climate protection law should be passed this year.
Details of the proposed ministerial committee were initially not disclosed. „Overall, the meeting took place in a good climate – also on climate,“ said SPD leader Andrea Nahles after the deliberations led by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). Against the draft submitted by Minister of the Environment Svenja Schulze (SPD) draft for the climate protection law there is resistance of numerous Union politicians, which refuse binding department prescriptions for the reduction of emissions.
Critic of the coalition decisions expressed Greens faction leader Anton Hofreiter. „Highly valiant names can not hide the fact that the Federal Government does not know about climate protection and founds a working group,“ he explained afterwards in Berlin. This would mean that the Union and the SPD would „not live up to their responsibility for future generations“. There should be no delay in the fight against the climate crisis.
Also decided was a „Concerted Action Mobility“. Accordingly, regular top-level talks with the players in the automotive industry are planned in order to discuss „rapid and far-reaching changes in the automotive industry“. It is about „quickly identify the political action needs and implement it in a sustainable strategy.“
The goal was „to secure Germany as the world’s leading location for the automotive industry“ and at the same time to adapt this industry as a pioneer „to the requirements of modern mobility,“ it said. „We will continue to work on this together,“ said Nahles.
