The Syria donors conference in Brussels has pledged about $ 7 billion in aid. They should benefit the victims of the civil war.

Participants in the international conference on donors in Syria have pledged a total of around seven billion dollars (6.2 billion euros) in aid this year. This was announced by European Commissioner Christos Stylianides on Thursday at the end of the meeting of representatives from more than 50 countries in Brussels. Germany promised an additional 1.44 billion euros for the victims of the civil war. However, this commitment does not just refer to the current year.

For example, the money raised at the conference will be used to finance food, medical assistance and education for children. According to United Nations figures, 11.7 million people still depend on humanitarian aid in Syria alone. In addition, millions of refugees in countries such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan need support.

The civil war in Syria broke out in 2011 after protests against President Bashar al-Assad. The beginning of the rebellion marks its eighth anniversary this Friday. All attempts to launch a political transition have so far failed. The government of President Assad now controls more than two-thirds of the country.
