The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan said that Tokyo considers Russian military exercises, which began on Tuesday, March 12, in the southern part of the Kuril Islands unacceptable.
It is reported TASS with reference to the representative of the press service of the Ministry.
„The presentation was made at the level of the adviser to the Russian embassy in Moscow to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia … The exercises, as stated, lead to the strengthening of Russian troops in the northern territories,“ the agency’s source said.
According to him, this is „unacceptable“ for Japan, since it contradicts the country’s position regarding the region.
In February, it was reported that Japan had expressed protest to Russia in connection with the trip to the Kuril Islands by the special envoy of the president for environmental protection, ecology and transport Sergei Ivanov.
An employee of IMEMO RAN, a specialist in Japan, Christina Voda, in an interview with FBA “Economy Today”, evaluated the positions of Moscow and Tokyo regarding the Kuriles.
