In the US Senate, a possible majority vote against the announced by US President Donald Trump National Emergency on the border with Mexico. At the weekend – after three others – another Senator from Trump’s Republicans signaled support for a resolution that the House of Representatives had approved a few days ago.
This could give the resolution a majority in the Republican-dominated Senate, provided the Democrats vote in favor. But it would remain in this case another hurdle.
Veto already announced
Because even if the Senate passes the resolution, Trump could veto it – which he has already announced. And to override this veto, a two-thirds majority would be required in both Congress chambers. It is currently not in sight.
Trump had declared a national emergency in mid-February to finance a wall on the border with Mexico without parliamentary approval. The congress had not approved the sum demanded of him. With the help of the declaration of emergency Trump wants to raise additional billions from other money pots. His approach is legally but very controversial.
