According to an agency report, Russia wants by all means to prevent a US military intervention in Venezuela. „We are very worried that the US could provoke and shed blood to find a reason to intervene in Venezuela,“ news agency TASS today quoted Federation Council Chairman Valentina Matvienko.
„We will do everything we can to not allow that,“ she told Venezuelan Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez at a meeting in Moscow. Matvijenko is a close ally of President Vladimir Putin.
Consultations with US agreed
At the same time, Russia agreed to discuss the Venezuela crisis with the US in bilateral talks. The government in Moscow will accept the US proposal, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. However, it is important to be guided by the principles of the UN Charter, as only the Venezuelan people have the right to decide their future. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had already phoned his US counterpart Mike Pompeo on Saturday to discuss the situation in Venezuela.
Russia and the US are cross-polled in the Venezuela crisis. While the government in Moscow supports Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the US has recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as transitional president. US President Donald Trump had said on the issue of military intervention in the oil-rich Latin American country, all options were open.
