US: US House of Representatives votes against declaration of default

The US House of Representatives has opposed the national emergency declared by US President Donald Trump. A majority of MPs voted for a resolution that would end the emergency.

But for this resolution to become final, the Senate and Trump would have to agree. Unlike the House of Representatives, however, the Senate has Trump’s Republican majority.

Donald Trump said he would veto if the resolution passed by both chambers. To override this veto, a two-thirds majority would be required in both chambers. That this comes together, is currently considered unlikely.

Trump had declared a national emergency on February 15, in order to finance his desired wall on the border with Mexico without parliamentary approval. The congress had denied Trump the desired sum of $ 5.7 billion. Last week, Democrats in the House of Representatives tabled the resolution to end the emergency. They argue that Trump eliminates the separation of powers. In his own ranks Trump was already criticized for his actions.

The president had justified the border emergency with an alleged invasion of migrants, criminal gangs and drug smuggling. 16 states have filed a class action lawsuit against the state of emergency.
