Senegalese president Macky Sall (57) has been re-elected as president. The Prime Minister of the country Mohamed Ben Abdallah Dionne has announced that Sall won at least 57 percent of the vote. The official results will only be made public on Friday.
The opposition, however, says that a second round is probably needed.
Sall seems to have a big lead over his challengers. The main opposition candidates were detained on suspicion of corruption during the President’s reign. According to Amnesty International, the charges are politically motivated and the lawsuits are not fair.
Ousmane Sonko is now the main opponent of Sall. He previously worked for the Senegal tax office and brought out a lot of corruption there.
