US President Donald Trump wants to make the former US Ambassador to Canada, Kelly Knight Craft, the new US Ambassador to the United Nations. That announced Trump yesterday in the short message service Twitter.

A new nomination had become necessary because the previous candidate Heather Nauert had unexpectedly withdrawn her application last Sunday. The personality must be confirmed by the Senate. Former incumbent Nikki Haley had left the post at the end of the year for personal reasons.

„Kelly has done an outstanding job as a representative of our country, and I have no doubt that our country will be represented under her leadership at the highest level,“ said Trump. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomed the President’s decision. He praised Knight Craft as an „outstanding lawyer“ for the security and business interests of the United States in Canada. She is „extremely well-qualified“ to continue this work at the UN.

Knight Crafts‘ diplomatic career began under former President George W. Bush, who appointed her to the US delegation to the United Nations. She represented Washington at UN meetings. The entrepreneur was also an important donor to the Republican campaign.

In 2017, after being named ambassador to Canada, Knight Craft frowned on the existence of climate change. She respects „both sides of science,“ she told Canadian broadcaster CBC.

Trump’s candidate is married to Joe Craft, who heads coal mining company Alliance Resource Partners, the second largest coal producer in the eastern United States. According to Forbes magazine, Craft had a fortune of $ 1.4 billion in 2012 (1.2 billion euros at today’s exchange rate). According to the non-governmental organization Open Secrets, he contributed a million dollars to the ceremony to mark the inauguration of Trump in January 2017.
