The tensions between Russia and the USA had recently worsened. Now the US launched a reconnaissance flight.
In the midst of tensions between the US and Russia, the US military is flying a reconnaissance machine over Russia. This was confirmed by a Pentagon spokesman on Thursday. On board, according to his information, are also six Russian observers who should observe all phases. The flight should therefore end on Friday.
The Pentagon relied on the Open Skies Treaty. This agreement between the NATO states and former members of the Warsaw Pact allows the signatories several observation flights each year in the airspace of the other side as well as recordings. The US uses a „Boeing OC-135B Open Skies“, an unarmed machine equipped with cameras.
As the Pentagon spokesman announced, it is the first flight under Russia since November 2017. The tensions between Russia and the US had recently intensified again after Washington and then Moscow had terminated the INF treaty banning land-based nuclear weapons.
