According to a study, India is at the top of the countries with the most deaths from pollution worldwide. This is followed by China and Nigeria, according to a recent study by the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP).
The numbers are also to be seen in relation to the population of the respective country. Chad, the Central African Republic and North Korea top the list of the most deaths per 100,000 population; India is tenth on this list.
USA also in the top ten
15 percent of all deaths worldwide – around 8.3 million people – were due to pollution in the survey year 2017. Among the ten countries with the highest number of pollution-related deaths are some of the largest and richest countries in the world – such as the USA in seventh place – and some poor countries.
„The report shows us that pollution is a global crisis,“ said Rachael Kupka, GAHP CEO. „It doesn’t matter where you live, pollution finds you.“
According to the study, slightly more people worldwide die from pollution than from tobacco use (eight million) and significantly more than from alcohol and drug use, diseases such as HIV, malaria and tuberculosis and from acts of war.
