The Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeast Syria have released more than 600 Syrian prisoners who were in custody for their links with the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia. All 631 released are Syrian citizens without „blood on their hands,“ said Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) spokesman Amdshad Osman yesterday. Foreigners with ties to IS have not yet been released.

Today’s releases from the prison camps near Qamishli near the border with Turkey are the first following an amnesty agreement with Arab tribes in eastern Syria, said Osman. More are to follow.

Syrian Kurds play an important role in the fight against IS in Syria, a country with a civil war. The SDF, dominated by the Kurdish militia YPG, is guarding thousands of IS prisoners, including many foreigners and their families, in the camps set up in northern Syria in 2016. You have long been calling on the international community to find a solution for the IS people captured. However, several European states have so far refused to bring the IS supporters back.
