363 people who were rescued from Libya by the rescue ship “Open Arms” from Libya are allowed to go ashore in Sicily. Previously, after several days of waiting yesterday evening, the Italian government gave the Spanish aid organization Proactiva Open Arms permission to enter Pozzallo. Malta, on the other hand, refused entry, the helpers wrote on Twitter.
The ship should enter port later this morning, a spokeswoman said today. Since the beginning of the year, Rome has assigned private rescue ships on the Mediterranean to safe ports several times very quickly. Other EU countries, including Germany and France, had previously agreed to accept some of the people. Austria has so far not participated in this distribution procedure.
Most people are currently moving from Libya to Italy. Aid groups report that the security situation in the civil war country has deteriorated significantly.
