The Israeli city of Tel Aviv claims to have distributed more than 13,000 traffic tickets to e-scooter and e-bike drivers since the beginning of the year. The drivers would drive unauthorized on the sidewalk, wear no helmet, be on the road for two on a vehicle or have turned it off wildly, said a spokeswoman for the city on Friday.
In addition, in the past two months alone, more than 1,000 e-scooters and bicycles were seized because they were chaotically parked. The administration has reported hundreds of e-scooter and bicycle parking spaces in the city center in recent weeks – vehicles can only be parked in these zones.
Residents had complained time and again that companions were parked for rent in the middle of the bike path or sidewalk. According to a report by the news side Calcalist, Tel Aviv alone has around 10,000 rental scooters. The e-scooters were very popular in the shallow coastal city well before the advent of vehicles in other major cities. The powered scooters come from US companies such as Bird and Lime.
Strict rules will soon be tightened again
In Israel, the minimum age for using e-scooters is 16 years, for rental models 18 years old. It is mandatory to wear a helmet, and you can only use the e-scooters on the bike path or on the road, not on the sidewalk. In addition, the ride is prohibited for two. There are also efforts to introduce a label for all e-scooters with license plates.
